worlds largest scale tui model

'iconic signage within city'

In 2006, Forest and Bird relocated their offices from Taranaki Street to the corner of Victoria and Ghuznee Street.

The building they vacated (due to structural safety issues) was an iconic landmark with a beautiful painted mural exterior. The new premises were lacking in this aesthetic appeal, which prompted Forest and Bird to come to Izzat with a simple brief, create something that would represent them as an organisation, and make the building stand out in the crowded cityscape.

Forest and Bird received the idea for a gigantic tui sign, perched on top of their building, with great enthusiasm. Not only was it the emblem of forest and Bird but the scale of the bird and accompanying kowhai flowers make it without a doubt the largest tui in the world, while definitively marking the organisations new home in the city!

Perching a 4m long sign on a downtown building requires strict engineering, and structural planning. Factors such as wind, fixings, and internal armature are of vital importance to ensure that the sign stays put under any circumstance. The Wellington City Council was exemplary in their help, advice and finally consent in bringing this project to life.

The result is the world’s largest tui, fondly nicknamed ‘Izzy’ after Izzat Design, perched downtown in Wellington the capital city of New Zealand.
