theme for visitors centre

'Hukawai Glacier Centre, Franz Joseph'

Izzat Design worked with 3D Creative to realize the tree and rock theme for the Hukawai Glacier Centre, Franz Joseph.

3D Creative approached Izzat in the early fabrication stages of the centre. The brief was to create and install a truly realistic interactive themed bush walk, replicating various rocks and trees from the natural environment. The task presented some interesting challenges, from how to replicate Rimu foliage too the logistics of getting a 40 ft container down to Franz Josef.

To achieve the realism, we took silicone moulds from tree trunks and rocks in the actual environment. We transported these moulds back to the workshop, where we took multiple castings from them. These castings were packed into the 40ft container, along with tools, equipment and four fake giant Rimu tree trunks, and send down to Franz Josef for installation.

The overall out come gives visitors to the centre an appreciation of the region in a ‘snapshot’, and is a great attractor when the weather is not!

The visitors centre has the only indoor ice-climbing wall in the southern hemisphere and is in use year round.
