replica potatoes for tourist information centre

display withstands close inspection

The client wanted sacks of potatoes for a display within their tourist visitor’s centre. The potatoes had to be robust enough for use in this very public environment. Due to the rarity of the variety of potato and the fact that real potatoes would eventually shrivel up and go to seed, we needed to employ an innovative moulding process.

The idea was to mould and cast the potatoes in such a way, as to provide the illusion of bulging sacks that would appear to be real potatoes even under close inspection.

For this process, we used both single moulds, and relief moulds. The potatoes’ we cast from expanding urethane foam then painted. Over the top of this, we used real dirt, the final touch giving the tubers the desired realistic look.
